Punjab Election 2027: A Campaign Checklist for Teams
In this article

Punjab's assembly term ends in March 2027, so the runway for a Punjab election 2027 campaign is short, and teams that start late will spend polling week catching up. This checklist sets out what to finish at each stage, how to plan across Majha, Doaba and Malwa, and why Punjabi in Gurmukhi should come first in every message you send.
Start With the Clock
Because the current assembly's term ends in March 2027, polling is expected before then. Reports suggest the early 2027 states could vote between February and April, but no schedule has been announced. Count back from a likely February or early March poll and the working window from today is roughly four months, with the winter and festival season in between.
That means the slow jobs need to start now: cleaning contact lists, registering SMS headers and templates, recording voice messages and training volunteers. Keep an eye on Punjab 2027 election updates from India Vote Kar or the Election Commission so you can lock dates as soon as they are confirmed.
Punjab at a Glance
- 117 assembly seats and 13 Lok Sabha seats.
- Three regions: Majha, between the Ravi and the Beas, around Amritsar and Gurdaspur; Doaba, between the Beas and the Sutlej, around Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur; and Malwa, south of the Sutlej, the largest region with the most seats.
- Language: Punjabi, written in Gurmukhi, is what most voters read and speak at home.
- Connections abroad: Many families, especially in Doaba, have relatives overseas who follow local news closely and talk to voters at home.
Plan Region by Region
Treat Majha, Doaba and Malwa as three separate campaigns that share one database. Each needs its own coordinator, its own message calendar and its own list of local issues.
Majha
Seats here sit close to the border. Teams should plan field visits around local conditions and keep a strong phone and SMS plan for villages that are harder to reach in person.
Doaba
Doaba is dense, with many towns close together. WhatsApp groups of opted-in supporters work well here, and family members abroad often forward messages back home. Keep the content simple and easy to share.
Malwa
Malwa covers a large area with many rural seats and long distances between villages. Voice broadcasts and SMS reach farming households reliably, and IVR surveys help you understand local priorities without sending a team to every village.
Running the three in parallel
Hold a short weekly call between the three region coordinators. Compare which messages drew the most missed calls and survey replies, and share recordings or scripts that worked. A good idea from Doaba can reach Malwa the same week instead of the next month, which matters when the campaign is only a few months long.
Use region tags in your CRM so that each message, survey and volunteer task goes to the right part of the state.
Countdown Checklist
With a short runway, some of these steps overlap. Set the days against your own constituency's polling date once it is announced.
About 120 days before polling
- Pick a coordinator for each region and each block.
- Gather existing contact lists and check every number for consent.
- Write a core message in Gurmukhi first, then adapt.
About 90 days before
- Load booth-wise lists into one CRM.
- Register the SMS sender header and message templates.
- Launch a missed call number for supporter and volunteer sign-ups.
About 60 days before
- Run an IVR keypress survey in Punjabi on two or three local issues.
- Assign booths to volunteers and set weekly visit targets.
- Record voice messages and prepare them for certification.
About 30 days before
- Submit voice and SMS content for pre-certification once the schedule is out.
- Follow up survey responses with phone calls and visits.
- Finalise booth agents for every polling station.
About 7 days before
- Send booth location reminders to opted-in supporters.
- Schedule the last messages to finish before the silence period begins.
- Run a helpline for volunteers and booth agents.
Polling day
- No campaign messages. Agents report problems through the helpline, and coordinators log them by booth.
Booth Lists and Volunteer Records
A short campaign has no time for duplicate work. Every volunteer should work from the same records.
- One list per booth: supporters, volunteers and local contacts, with phone numbers gathered with consent.
- One owner per booth: a named volunteer who is responsible for visits and follow-up calls.
- Every interaction logged: who was called, what they said, and what was promised. If a farmer asked about a canal repair, the next caller should see it.
- Weekly review: region coordinators check which booths have gone quiet and move volunteers to fill gaps.
Punjabi in Gurmukhi First
Write every message in Punjabi, in Gurmukhi script, before anything else. A message drafted in English or Hindi and then translated often reads stiffly, and voters notice.
- SMS: Use Unicode Gurmukhi. Keep messages short, because Unicode SMS fits fewer characters in each part.
- Voice broadcasts: Record in Punjabi with a local voice. The accent of Majha, Doaba and Malwa differs, so a recording by someone from the region sounds more familiar.
- WhatsApp: Send only to people who have opted in. Short videos and images with Gurmukhi text work well. Read our guide to WhatsApp marketing for political campaigns for practical tips.
- Hindi and English: Prepare versions for urban areas and for voters who prefer them, but treat them as second versions.
The Wider Channel Plan
Punjab has good mobile coverage, so you can use every channel. The aim is to make each one do a clear job.
- Missed call number: For supporter and volunteer sign-ups from posters, rallies and newspaper ads. A missed call records support only. It does not register anyone as a voter, which happens only through the Election Commission.
- IVR surveys: Quick keypress questions to learn priorities by region.
- Voice broadcasts: For announcements of events and visits.
- SMS: For reminders and booth details.
LeadNXT provides these channels together with Punjab election campaign management tools, including a WhatsApp Business API with chatbot for answering common supporter questions.
Make each channel point to the next
A voice broadcast can end with the missed call number. A missed call can trigger an SMS with event details. A survey reply can create a follow-up task for the booth volunteer. Linking channels this way means fewer people slip through, which helps a lean team do more in less time.
Compliance Checklist
The rules below are general. Confirm the current directions with the Election Commission and your service provider before you send anything.
- The Model Code of Conduct applies from the day the schedule is announced.
- Pre-certification by the Election Commission's media certification and monitoring committees is needed for electronic political advertising, including bulk SMS and voice messages. Allow time for this in a short runway.
- TRAI rules require a registered sender header, approved templates, consent from recipients, DND scrubbing and sending only within permitted hours.
- The silence period means no campaigning in the 48 hours before polling ends.
Get Supporters to the Booth
Young voters turning 18 and people who have recently moved are the most likely to find problems with the roll. Point them to a guide for first-time voters early, ask everyone to check their name on the electoral roll, and remind them to carry a valid photo ID on polling day.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will Punjab vote in 2027?
The schedule is not announced. Since the term ends in March 2027, polling is expected before then, possibly in February or early March. Check India Vote Kar or the Election Commission.
Should messages be in Gurmukhi or Roman script?
Gurmukhi first. Most voters read Punjabi in Gurmukhi, and it feels more natural than Punjabi typed in English letters.
How should we split work across Majha, Doaba and Malwa?
Give each region its own coordinator, message calendar and issue list, but keep one shared database so records are not duplicated.
Can we message supporters during the silence period?
No campaigning is allowed in the 48 hours before polling ends. Schedule all messages to finish before it begins.
What does LeadNXT's IVR cost?
IVR plans start at โน17,988 a year plus GST. Missed call alerts with API cost โน12,500 a year plus GST.
